This is a story about a normal human being, just like you and me.
A typical working class citizen.
The only difference between us is that his life is about to change forever…

Chapter 1

A Midnight Hour

It was a cold damp morning, the wind rustled through the trees in the back yard. Moister from previously fallen raindrops slid down the windowpane of the master bedroom.
It was 2.30.
The room was dark, and quiet. Two bodies lay stiffly in the master bed. Yet Dan was awake. Beside him lay the girl he had once loved wrapped up tightly in half the duvet leaving him very little to keep warm. This didn’t matter to Dan; he had no intention of going to sleep. He sat upright gazing silently at the glimmer of moonlight shinning on the door. All he wanted was to get out of this room and grab a drink from his liquor cabinet. Yet he couldn’t, the fear of waking her up and listening to her voice was enough to silence his thoughts.
He lay there for a while contemplating what to do, he wanted to drift off but he couldn’t, not with her beside him.
She didn’t know it, but he knew all the secrets she kept from him. She acted like there was nothing wrong, dodging every question with an insult towards him. Yet he could see through the vial of lies.
He knew her dirty little secret.

Chapter 2

Morning

The kitchen was small. ‘Cozy’ he had once called it, but like everything in this house he had grown to hate.  As he waited for the kettle to boil he could hear the thud of her coming down the stairs.  ‘Click’ the kettle had finished boiling, as he went over to pour the hot liquid into the mugs she appeared at the doorway, walking through the threshold into the kitchen. “I hope your making me one and not just yourself,” she said in a monotone expression. He did not answer, he poured the milk into the hot mug and passed it to her. No thanks was given, this had stopped for a while now.
She sat down on the kitchen table and took a sip from the hot mug.  Dan continued, he liked to savor the time creating his tea, this way he would enjoy it more. As he began to stir the sugar, the whine from the woman behind him bellowed out into his ears. “I see you haven’t fixed the shelf again, waste of fuckin time you are”. He gripped the handle of the mug tightly, restraining himself from lashing out. “I see your shagging my best friend but you don’t see me fucking complaining” his mind calmed with this thought. That was the one problem Dan had with her, he could never say what he wanted to her face, instead he said it to himself in his mind. He did not know why he couldn’t just shout back at her; maybe it was the prolonged thought that she would turn it against him.

He took his tea by the handle and headed for his room. It was a long day of work ahead of him; he needed some time to gather his thoughts alone.
